Decoding Artificial Intelligence
This publication was collaboratively designed at W.I.R.E. with NZZ Libro for Amt for Wirtschaft und Arbeit, Stadt Zürich in 2019
The age of artificial intelligence is upon us. What has long been predicted by science fiction authors now seems to be becoming reality: Intelligent machines that independently solve tasks and relieve us of strenuous activities. But the outlook is not all optimistic: Skeptical voices fear the takeover of power by a superintelligence, mass unemployment, or the dystopia of a digital surveillance state. In "Decoding Artificial Intelligence", the think tank W.I.R.E. classifies the actual potential of AI and shows why the effective challenges lie in societal issues and the limited potential due to lack of transparency or discrimination tendencies of algorithmic decisions. The book provides a basis for classifying the opportunities and challenges of AI, thinks ahead about the future of learning machines in a larger perspective in the form of theses, points out concrete fields of action, and explains why artificial intelligence requires human intelligence.
